  Phoenix has a dry desert climate, but “dry heat” is still serious heat. From late spring through early fall, daytime temperatures can exceed 100°F, and vehicles, sidewalks and outdoor surfaces become dangerously hot. Carry water everywhere, use sunscreen, wear light clothing and schedule outdoor activities during the morning or evening. Never leave a child, adult or animal unattended in a vehicle. During extreme heat, Phoenix provides free cooling centers throughout the city.  

  Visitors arriving from Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta or other greener areas may need time to adjust to Phoenix’s desert appearance. Many yards and public spaces use rocks, gravel, cactuses, palm trees and drought-tolerant plants instead of traditional green lawns. This landscaping—often called desert landscaping or xeriscaping—reduces water use and is better suited to Phoenix’s hard soil, intense heat and limited rainfall.

There is still grass at many parks, golf courses, resorts, schools and selected neighborhoods, but large green lawns are not the Valley’s normal landscape. At first, the brown mountains and rocky yards can appear bare. Over time, many newcomers begin to appreciate the desert’s own colors: red sunsets, blooming cactuses, palo verde trees, mountain shadows and wide-open skies. Arizona is not without natural beauty—it is simply a different kind of beauty.  

  Like many growing American cities, Phoenix and the surrounding Valley have people experiencing homelessness. Visitors may encounter unhoused individuals downtown, near transit stations, in parks or along major streets. The region’s 2026 count remained nearly level overall, while the number of unsheltered people decreased by 12%. Most interactions are uneventful: remain aware of your surroundings, treat everyone respectfully and avoid photographing people without permission. Call 911 if you witness an immediate emergency. 

Arizona’s food scene reflects its Southwestern location and diverse population. Mexican and Sonoran-style food are major influences, with tacos, burritos, tamales, carne asada and restaurants serving regional dishes throughout the Valley. Phoenix also offers Native American cuisine, steakhouses, barbecue, Asian restaurants, Mediterranean food, vegan options and a growing collection of chef-driven restaurants.

Black food culture is present through historic soul-food restaurants, Caribbean and African cuisine, Southern cooking, hot chicken, brunch spots and food trucks. However, these restaurants are spread throughout the Valley rather than located in one central district. Visitors may need to drive between Phoenix, Glendale, Tempe, Mesa and Chandler to experience the full food scene.   Greater Phoenix offers nightlife, but it is spread across several cities and entertainment districts rather than concentrated in one location. Downtown Phoenix and Roosevelt Row offer cocktail bars, live music and arts-oriented venues. Old Town Scottsdale is known for upscale lounges and high-energy clubs, while Tempe’s Mill Avenue attracts a younger college crowd. Glendale’s Westgate Entertainment District offers restaurants, bars, concerts and sporting events.

Black nightlife is active but less centralized. R&B parties, grown-folks nights, live bands, brunches and cultural events frequently move between Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale, Mesa, Glendale and the West Valley. Visitors should check the event, address and travel time before leaving because two nightlife destinations can be 30–45 minutes apart.   Driving north from Phoenix toward Sedona, Prescott, Flagstaff or the Grand Canyon involves steep grades, winding roads and major elevation changes. Weather can also change quickly: Phoenix may be sunny while higher elevations have rain, ice or snow.

Slow down before curves, leave additional following distance and use a lower gear when traveling down long, steep grades instead of continuously riding your brakes. Check road and weather conditions before leaving, keep your fuel tank reasonably full and carry water. During winter, some mountain routes may require tire chains or temporary closures.

  Most of Arizona does not observe daylight saving time. The state remains on Mountain Standard Time throughout the year, so residents do not move their clocks forward in March or backward in November.

During daylight saving time, Phoenix shares the same clock time as California. During the winter, Phoenix shares the same clock time as Colorado. The Navajo Nation is the major Arizona exception and does observe daylight saving time. Always confirm Arizona time when booking flights, watching live events or scheduling calls with another state.

 Arizona’s summer monsoon (JULY 15TH - SEPT 30) can bring sudden thunderstorms, strong winds, lightning, flash flooding and large walls of dust. Never drive into a dust storm or attempt to cross a flooded roadway. If blowing dust makes driving impossible, follow Arizona’s “Pull Aside, Stay Alive” safety instructions and get completely off the roadway when it is safe. 

  Arizona has a large and diverse economy, with opportunities in healthcare, construction, education, hospitality, logistics, government, technology, manufacturing and financial services. However, the job market is competitive, and wages do not always keep pace with rising housing and transportation costs.

Arizona’s unemployment rate was 4.9% in July 2026, compared with 4.1% nationally. Anyone considering a move should research salaries, commute times and housing costs—and ideally secure employment before relocating. Phoenix is spread out, so having dependable transportation can significantly expand your job options.

 Black culture in Arizona is less concentrated and immediately visible than it is in cities such as Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore or Washington, D.C. Black residents represent approximately 7.8% of Phoenix’s population, and the community is spread throughout Phoenix, Glendale, Laveen, Avondale, Goodyear, Mesa, Chandler and other parts of the Valley. There is no single large, nationally recognized Black cultural district.

That does not mean Black culture is absent. The Valley has historic Black churches, the Black Theatre Troupe, Black-owned restaurants, professional organizations, social groups, festivals, nightlife and community events. The challenge for newcomers is finding everything because activities are dispersed and information is often shared through social media and word of mouth.
